Norton 360

In the starting, there was just a personal computer and which helps the people with work and other things.

It was the year 1975 when all of this happened. And invention of the PC promised to change the way we live and manage things through it. Hence, with its working opened new possibilities at home and at work, as it helped in many ways. So, before long it became a target for a new menace.

With the arrival of the computer virus marked the first time that criminals took aim at this new technology of creating bugs and viruses. Hence, as we know that it marked the beginning of a new industry and is focused on providing computer security to users.

The Norton products have evolved over the past four decades, and it now includes protection of your devices, online privacy, and identity of systems. To fight today’s ever-evolving cyber threats, bugs, Norton Life-lock is providing a new level of Cyber Safety which is very useful for its users.

So, let’s not get ahead of the story but take a look at it with ease.

Below is the look at the evolution of Norton 360 — with its 7 key milestones — starting first with the computer virus.

1. Starting how SAM met Norton in year-(1990)

The earliest primary viruses were transmitted via infected floppy disks — those clunky four-sided data-storage devices which now seem old by modern standards. Since when the floppy disks were detachable media, the viruses were easy to contain in that.

And it get tougher when computers started to connect with the internet eventually. These viruses began to spread more rapidly, and very easily while putting every machine in their path at risk.

The Symantec was among one of the earliest companies to fight viruses in their computers. These company began to develop a DOS-based antivirus program in 1989 as a further progress. In the very same year, Symantec released its first antivirus product for Apple computers, Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh — or SAM, to its friends and some of the end-users.

During, the same time Peter Norton, a programmer and software publisher, produced the first version of Norton Utilities for its DOS and ensure its optimized working. The company designed the suite to help analyze, configure, optimize, and maintain a computer for the same. The computer which ran Norton Utilities improved its boot speed and overall performance immediately after its discovery.

With the invention of SAM’s early success and the increasing demand for antivirus products, it made sense for Symantec to acquire Peter Norton’s company and fold Norton Utilities into the company and also to add advancements to it.

2.The Norton AntiVirus year- (1991)

Within less than a year after SAM and Norton Utilities came jointly, Symantec launched Norton AntiVirus for PC —and its very first antivirus software for consumers or end-users. These product helped in preventing virus infection and removed malicious software and bugs from computers itself. This also included email filtering and phishing protection features to help protect against phishing scams or anything similar.

3. The Norton 2000 launched in- (1998)

Do you remember the Y2K bug? at that time it was the fear that computers would crash worldwide anytime when the clock turned from 1999 to Y2K — the Year 2000. Hence, most computer programs stored the year values of dates as a two-digit figure. And when the two-digit space allocated for “99” turned to 2000, it was expected that the next number would be “00” otherwise it can’t run. And hence, the resulting “00” would be smaller than “99”, it was feared that programs would get confused, computers would crash, and havoc would ensue anytime.

And, “Y2K compliance” became the catch phrase during that time. So, the consumers needed to check their PCs and Macs to make sure their devices were Y2K compliant.

When Norton 2000 hit the market firstly?

Hence, it evaluated the software in desktops by scanning for applications and data which could cause problems and errors across the year 2000 date change. Hence, Norton 2000 identified, prioritized, and reported on two-digit date calculation anomalies in its applications.

It tested computer systems’ BIOS, real-time clock, and system clock via a boot floppy for its more secured working. And if they found a BIOS/clock problem, and it can be fixed by a software, Norton 2000 repaired the problem easily. And if it couldn’t, then it informed the user to update the system’s BIOS regularly.

4. The launch of Norton Internet Security (2000-2007)

During the time when the internet entered more homes, so did unsolicited email spam messages, and computer cookies came along with it. The start of annoying banner-ads and invasive cookies were tracking every website with its view and click. To help protect its customers against these issues, Norton released its first product which went beyond antivirus massively. Norton Internet Security provided all the features of Norton Antivirus, such as malware prevention and removal, email spam filtering, and phishing protection, bugs and also included features like cookie removal and banner-ad blocking.

But it wasn’t all. After sometime, Norton Internet Security added a personal firewall — a feature which, until that time, had mainly been available only to companies and corporations only.

The personal firewall is a powerful two-way program that helps protect computer users against the cybercriminals by ensuring that personal data doesn’t leave the computer without its user’s consent or approval.

Norton Internet Security brought firewalls into the home, making computers safer for its users to search for the internet.

Norton Internet Security also released a Family Edition, that time which included parental controls which helped parents monitor their kids’ online activities safely.

5. Launch of original edition of Norton 360 (2007) – paving the way for the future

The original edition of Norton 360 was created in order to provide security to the PCs. Given that the cyberthreats which existed during that time, and it was a holistic collection of computer protection software solutions, which included an antivirus program, a personal firewall, a phishing protection feature, a new backup program, and PC maintenance capabilities very effectively.

And for the first time, Norton was perfectly able to provide high-capacity backup. Its PC users could automatically back up their photos, music, contacts, financial documents, and other data to CDs, DVDs, or external drives anytime. The original edition of Norton 360 was available in different offerings such as Norton 360 (standard) and Norton 360 Premier Edition and some many more.

With the rising popularity of smartphones and tablets created a new need for improved cybersecurity for its end-users. The users liked internet access on the go, and cyber criminals started targeting mobile devices with ransomware, spyware, bugs and other kinds of malicious software very quickly. Watching this trend, Norton 360 Multi-Device was introduced to provide device security for its Windows PCs, Macs, and mobile devices all together in one service without any further delay.

6. launch of Norton Security -(2014)

Just after the release of the original edition of Norton 360, Norton continued to expand its product line very sharply. Between 2007 to 2014, there were more than 20 products and customers could choose from it. And they ranged from general security solutions to stand-alone products and services.

As the users know that Norton has always put its customers at the center of its business strategy and listening to their feedback and responding to their needs is a major part of that. And from this feedback, Norton made a surprising discovery: Many of its users said that the vast menu of products made it difficult for them to choose the right protection.

It was the time to change eventually. Norton decided to offer users the same great services and solutions, but in a more simplified and easy format. But it also stopped making some products such as the original edition of Norton 360, and other products were built into a new product lineup afterwards.

And that is how Norton Security was born.

Its users now had the latest security software in an easy-to-choose format very easily. Its roll-out included four major products:

  1. Norton AntiVirus Basic
  2. Norton Security Standard
  3. Norton Security Deluxe
  4. Norton Security Premium

All of its four products were— compatible with Windows and some with Mac OS — and this came with antivirus and malware protection features of the original edition of Norton 360.

All these features varied, but the simplified lineup made it easy for the users to select the product which fit their needs.
